Shreyas Iyer is a gifted player, but he needs to work on his defense against short balls: Scott Styris. “If he can do that, I think he’ll be one of the first names on that Indian side,” Styris added.
Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris has expressed admiration for Shreyas Iyer’s leadership abilities and believes he is a future contender for Indian captaincy. The former cricketer also shared his thoughts on Iyer’s short-ball woes. Iyer looked like the real deal in the home series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, when he kept piling up runs, but it has been a difficult road for him since then. The right-hander struggled with the bat for his new IPL franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Few cricketers can hit spinners as far as Iyer, and he enjoys taking them on. However, his consistent dismissals against short balls have become a source of concern, and teams have been targeting him with pacers. Iyer has yet to find a way out and will be hoping that the upcoming ODIs in the West Indies will bring about a change.

Many teams will use quick bowlers to attack Shreyas Iyer: Scott Styris
“What I admire most about Shreyas Iyer are his leadership qualities.” I believe he has a strong chance of becoming India’s captain. As a result, I’d like to see him in and give him more and more chances to be around this squad,” Styris told Sports18.
“What I don’t like, the negative if you will, is that Shreyas has no secrets. He struggles a lot with the short ball. “I believe you’ll see a lot of teams attack him with quick bowlers looking to attack the body with the bouncer, go under the armpit if you like because I’m not sure he’s found a way,” he added.
Styris compared Iyer to Suresh Raina, who had a similar issue. He concluded that Iyer possesses talent and should be given ample opportunities unless he is replaced.
“In that regard, he’s almost like Suresh Raina in that teams now know how to attack him.” It’s now up to Shreyas Iyer to figure out how to beat that style of bowling. If he can do that, I believe he should be one of the first names on that Indian side. “I really like all of his qualities, but until then, I think you just have to give him opportunities, and if he can’t find success, then you need to find someone else who can,” he added.
