South African Pacer Lungi Ngidi Responds to Criticism for Supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement. Lungi Ngidi, a Proteas pacer, has spoken about his family members’ racism experiences, which shaped his thought process.

Racism has a frequently discussed topic in South Africa. Cricket has not been immune to allegations of racism in the country. South Africa’s cricket team has frequently demonstrated proactive support for the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. South Africa took knee in almost all of the matches at the 2021 T20 World in the UAE. In an interview, senior Proteas pacer Lungi Ngidi discussed his family members’ racism experiences, which shaped his thought process.

“My father worked as a gas station attendant, and a white customer would not even put money in his hand. He simply threw it on the floor “Lungi Ngidi told The Guardian in an interview.

“I doubt I’ll ever forget that story. It was so humiliating. It took a lot of courage for my father to carry on with life as if everything was fine, but this is how they raised me. The stories they told were both eye-opening and painful to hear, because those scars never truly heal.”

The lanky fast bowler, who was named South Africa’s men’s ODI and T20 Cricketer-of-the-Year in 2020, has also been an outspoken supporter of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Several former South African cricketers, however, chastised him for his stance.

“”I was surprised because I didn’t step on anyone’s toes,” the 26-year-old says. I did not assault anyone. But I understand our country’s history, and racism is a problem in South Africa that must be addressed. I remembered the stories my parents had told me, and I would hate for any of my future friends or family to go through the same thing.”
