Sunil Gavaskar on whether Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s Test run record. There is much debate about whether the 31-year-old Root can challenge Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time run scoring record.
Sunil Gavaskar understands what it takes to score runs in Test cricket. The Indian batting legend was the first to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket, and he has weighed in on the newest member of the elite club, Joe Root. In the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, the former England captain has been in devastating form with the bat, scoring centuries at will. There is much debate about whether the 31-year-old Root can challenge Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time run scoring record. Gavaskar has stated that anything is possible in sports, but even someone with Root’s level of consistency will face a difficult task.

Sunil Gavaskar on Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s Test run record.
“That is an insurmountable record because we are talking about another almost 6000 runs, which means you would have to score about 1000 runs or 800 runs over the next 8 years to get there,” Gavaskar told India Today.
“Joe Root has experience on his side” (31 years old). He can certainly (break the record) if he can maintain his enthusiasm and continue.
“Alastair Cook retired, but he continues to play first-class cricket. When you’re playing around the clock, your form can suffer as a result of mental fatigue. Root is averaging 150 points per game, but it can be taxing on him both mentally and physically “He continued.
The veteran commentator used the example of the most Test wickets and stated that records are broken all the time.
“In the game, anything is possible. We thought Richard Hadlee’s 431 wouldn’t break, but it was surpassed. Then we remembered Courtney Walsh’s 519… So, take a look at where we’re going. (It is) not impossible, but very very difficult.”
Tendulkar had a 24-year career in which he scored 15921 runs at an average of over 53 in 200 Test matches. He is the only batter in Test cricket history to have scored more than 50 centuries.
