Bangladesh’s pacers, who made their World Cup debut in Dunedin; gave an excellent account of themselves as they bowled South Africa out for 207 in 46 overs; paced by 19-year-old left-arm pacer Fariha Trisna’s 3 for 35.

Laura Wolvaardt (41) got them off to a great begin with five boundaries in a 52-ball remain at the wicket; which given bounty of openings for the quick bowlers; whereas Tazmin Brits took her time getting going. They had for the most part recouped from losing the Brits to Trisna on the powerplay; when Wolvaardt and Lara Goodall both fell within the space of four transports; putting South Africa on the skirt of losing the diversion. Laura Wolvaardt got them off to a good start with five boundaries in a 52-ball stay at the wicket; providing plenty of opportunities for the quick bowlers, while Tazmin Brits took her time getting going.

To make matters worse, Rumana Ahmed, who had already taken two catches on the day; then caught experienced Mignon du Preez off her own bowling before dismissing Sune Luus for 25 in the 34th over; leaving South Africa at 119/5.

The 74-run partnership of Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon got the team out of danger; putting them on track for a 200-plus total to give their bowlers something to work with. While Kapp’s 45-ball 42 was more focused on strike rotation, Tryon (39 off 40) hammered; a few of big ones to catch up on the earlier dots. Trisna added two more to her score when Jahanara Alam; broke the menacing combination in the nick of time, accounting for both set batters on either side of a 5 for 17 collapse.

The Bangladesh openers were steady in their response, scarcely putting a foot wrong; but the necessity to accelerate to confront the rising asking rate eventually got the better of them. With two maidens up front, Khaka added to the strain, and then bowled Shamima to let the floodgates open. Six balls later, Akhter, who had been tempted with width, sent a thick outside edge through to the keeper. Murshida Khataun met a similar end in the same episode.

As Bangladesh appeared to be on the mend; Rumana Ahmed got her side past the 100-run mark with the first of two back-to-back boundaries off Tryon; but Khaka returned to the attack and sent her packing on 32-ball 21 to become; the fifth South African to reach 100 ODI wickets. Nigar Sultana and Ritu Moni, the captain and vice-captain, rekindled the boundaries; putting on a 53-run seventh-wicket stand that gave Bangladesh hope once more. In the 46th over, Shabnim Ismail; who had gone wicketless in her previous eight overs, pegged down Moni’s legstump for a key break. Bangladesh needed 41 runs off their final four overs when Nigar; was run out in the next over, which was too much for the lower order.

South Africa 207 all out in 45.2 overs (Marizanne Kapp 42, Laura Wolvaardt 41; Fariha Trisna 3-35, Jahanara Alam 2-28, Ritu Monin 2-36); were defeated by Bangladesh 175 all out in 49.3 overs (Nigar Sultana 29; Ayabonga Khaka 4-32, Masabata Klaas 2-36) by 32 runs.
