The evacuation of Indians across the Poland border, which the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described as a “problem region,” has made some progress, with nearly 2,000 individuals, mostly students, passing by noon on Tuesday.

According to Adam Burakowski, Poland’s Ambassador to India, approximately 1,700 Indians had safely arrived in Poland as of 7 a.m. (Polish time). “We’ve already received nearly 400,000 individuals.” Poland is also preparing to accept anyone and a large number of persons fleeing Russian aggression. He went on to say, “We don’t look at nationality.”

Hundreds of Indian students, however, remain stranded in subzero temperatures, particularly at the Shehyni-Medyka border crossing. Many people have claimed that Ukrainian and Polish border guards discriminate against them. Burakowski flatly denied that his country discriminated against him.

However, the Ambassador recognized that removing a significant number of people had “logistical challenges.” “On the ground, there are tens of thousands of people” (waiting at the border). Both countries’ border police (Ukraine and Poland) are doing everything they can to assist.

However, there is such a large throng. It’s impossible to advise a million people to cross in five minutes. Yes, the wait is long, but we’re doing everything we can,” Burakowski explained. “You know, space (at the border crossing) have limits. How can you accommodate a million people at a border crossing that isn’t design to handle that many?
