International Chess tournaments by FIDE: Russia and Belarus have been barred from hosting.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, FIDE, the world governing body of chess; took the historic step of banning Russia and Belarus from participating in any world chess events. The FIDE Council sees its fundamental purpose as preserving FIDE’s unity; and also safeguarding the essential human rights inherent in the FIDE Charter, as stated by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.
The FIDE Council has taken a number of significant emergency measures in this regard.
“FIDE expresses severe worry about Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine. The FIDE is also unanimous in its opposition to wars and condemns the use of military force to resolve political disputes. FIDE will take whatever steps are require to safeguard the safety of chess players and other chess community members. “There will be no official FIDE chess contests or events in Russia or Belarus,” FIDE announced in a statement.
FIDE’s decision comes just days before the start of the next Grand Prix event in Belgrade; which will feature five Russian grandmasters: Andrey Esipenko (replacing Dmitry Andreikin); Alexander Grischuk, Vladimir Fedoseev, Nikita Vitiugov, and Alexandr Predke (replacing Dmitry Andreikin).
FIDE’s most important decisions were:
1. Official FIDE chess contests and events are prohibit in Russia and Belarus.
2. National flags are prohibits from being shown by Russian and Belarusian players; during FIDE-rated events, and the national song will not be play.
3. All sponsorship agreements with Russian or Belarusian sanction and/or state-control enterprises will be terminated by FIDE.
FIDE also stated that “any public remark from any member of the chess community; that promotes unjustified military action” is unacceptable. Sergey Karjakin and Sergey Shipov, two Russian grandmasters; will face the Ethics and also Disciplinary Commission after making contentious comments online, according to the organization.

Given that the organization is predominantly sponsor by Russian corporate donors; and also sponsors such as Gazprom and Nornickel, the choice was almost probably divisive inside the organization.
Meanwhile, FIDE President Arkady Dvokovich is a former Kremlin insider; having served as Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and organizer of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The FIDE Council also indicates that, regardless of how the 2022 Chess Olympiad is organize; FIDE will hold the annual FIDE Congress on the previously scheduled dates – July 27 to August 2; with the election date on August 1. The FIDE Congress should be combines with the 2022 Chess Olympiad. However, negotiations with potential organizers of the 2022 Chess Olympiad will be control; and the FIDE Congress dates may be adjust if this does not result in a significant delay in elections. The FIDE Council also affirms that the continental elections would be held in accordance with the requirements of their constitution.
