Wasim Jaffer, a former member of the Indian cricket team; has made a strong comment regarding all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer after the youngster shone; with the bat in the finisher’s role during the recent T20I series against the West Indies. In a honest interview with ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer detailed how Venkatesh Iyer’s all-round qualities; and recent performances have pushed him “ahead” of Hardik Pandya in the race for a spot in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad later this year. Iyer’s bowling offers him a “edge,” according to Jaffer, and makes him a “genuine competitor now.”
“As a number six batter, I’m shocked at how well he’s doing. We’ve seen him as a starter, but for him to come out and adapt; so effectively to the number six position and finish games is incredible. Venkatesh finished as India’s second top run-getter in the three-match; T20I series against the West Indies, scoring 92 runs at a remarkable strike-rate of 184. In the T20I series, he was India’s fourth best bowler, claiming two wickets at an excellent average of 13.50.
