After losing the Test series, KL Rahul’s ODI captaincy debut ended in a 31-run loss.
Shikhar Dhawan was gone just as it looked like he and Virat Kohli were laying the groundwork for a triumph in Paarl. Kohli followed Dhawan back to the pavilion, looking in complete control until he played an unusual sweep shot. In the end, India’s only semblance of resistance came in the form of a 92-run second-wicket stand. They rapidly dropped from 138/2 to 188/6. After losing the Test series, KL Rahul’s ODI captaincy debut ended in a 31-run loss.
India was defeated by 31 runs in the first One-Day International.
In this round, the visitors gave up the initiative twice. The first was allowing South Africa to recover spectacularly thanks to the twin tons of Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen. On a slow Boland Park pitch, a sub-300 total was still doable. India was stung even harder by the failure to build on the Dhawan-Kohli combo. KL Rahul’s inept captaincy and poor team selection also contributed to the defeat, but we’ll get to that later.

Van der Dussen had the day to himself, as he blew the wind out of India’s sails. The hosts were in trouble at 68/3 after batting first. The ball was turning a little on a dry surface. The bounce was low, and Ravichandran Ashwin had just dispatched Quinton de Kock by skidding off the turf. Aiden Markram was run out twice in a row, both times courtesy of a direct hit from Venkatesh Iyer. On the other end, Yuzvendra Chahal was catching on and turning the ball. Van der Dussen’s reaction was a four-handed reverse sweep. In Chahal’s next delivery, the batsman used a conventional sweep to get another four. The clear was called once more, and a four and a few followed. India needed a Arrange B after the leg-spinner was rendered useless.
Bavuma, as well, picked up certainty and propelled an attack on Chahal. The Saffers team started to create an affect on Indian bowling as a team. The bowlers continuously ran out of steam within the bursting heat. In the 49th over, Bavuma was inevitably expelled for 110 runs off 143 balls. Van der Dussen scored 129 off 96 conveyances, counting nine fours and four sixes, to stay unbeaten. They put on a 204-run organization for the fourth wicket, with Van der Dussen as the master and Bavuma as the anchor. The Proteas wrapped up with a score of 296/4.

Iyer is not use as a bowler.
Nobody knows why Rahul didn’t utilize Iyer as a bowler at all.
India’s stand-in skipper had commented about how a seaming all-rounder may be an addition to the team during the pre-match news conference, praising the newcomer. Iyer are giving his ODI debut, apparently as a backup bowler, as Suryakumar Yadav warmed up on the bench. Despite Shardul Thakur leaking runs, including a 17-run over, the debutant was left out. Only Jasprit Bumrah made an impression for Rahul, who stuck to his five specialist bowlers.
Dhawan’s batting performance was India’s positive takeaway from this game. After a six-month absence, he returned to the international fold and immediately centered the ball. He was particularly impressive in his handling of Marco Jansen, the left-arm quick who caused India a lot of difficulties in the Test series. Dhawan are remove by Keshav Maharaj after hitting 79 off 84 balls, misjudging the length and turn.
Kohli was batting brilliantly. The shot of the match was a wristy flip past mid-wicket for a four against a Lungi Ngidi delivery that landed very wide outside the off stump. The second ball, which are nearly identical to the first, are driving to sweeper cover. Kohli scored 51 runs off 63 deliveries, however he failed to convert once more. A sweep effort against Tabraiz Shamsi was out of the ordinary. The ball barely made contact with the bat’s toe-end.

In a tour where they were overwhelming favorites, India has already lost three games in a row across all formats. India’s middle-order batting once again failed to impress. Catching, on the other hand, was not up to par. Indian spinners are again out-bowl by their South African counterparts at a location that had a homey feel to it. While Ashwin and Chahal each handed up 106 runs for a wicket, Shamsi, Maharaj, and part-timer Markram (who opened the bowling) each took four wickets for a total of 124 runs.
