Salman Butt, reacting to Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali’s angry exchange with a journalist during a recent press conference, said the cricketer’s behavior was in poor taste. Butt believes Hasan should have listened to the scribe’s complete question before politely responding, “no remarks.”
Hasan stopped a journalist’s question at a press conference following the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022 players’ draft on Sunday, saying, “next question please.”
The debate continued, with the media representative advising Hasan not to duck the question and the pacer cautioning him not to get personal with anyone. Islamabad United has kept Hasan in the Platinum category for the PSL 2022 season.
“I hope he doesn’t repeat it. It is very simple – asking questions is a journalist’s right, and you cannot deny him that. He should have heard the entire question and said ‘no comments’. He had the right to do that. If he would have said ‘no comments’, it would have meant that the next person can ask the question.” he said
Hasan and the journalist should talk and work out their disagreements, according to the former Pakistan captain, because they will need to engage with each other in the future.
“When you interrupt someone between a question, it is in bad taste. Whatever the problem was, they should speak to each other and try and sort it out. Hasan has to play cricket and attend press conferences and the same person and other media people have to ask questions.” Butt added
T20 World Cup
Hasan was heavily chastised in Pakistan for his dismal performance at the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. In the semi-final, he dropped a simple catch of Matthew Wade, which many believe cost Pakistan the match.
Butt was also disappointed by the lack of intervention from those in the audience during Hasan’s press conference. He believed they should have responded more immediately to try to de-escalate the situation.
“As a professional, he should have heard the question and then responded. But I also feel people sitting around him should have intervened. There were two people in the video with Hasan. Maybe they could have stopped Hasan.” he said
“Hasan is a fast bowler by nature and aggressive. At times, because of some other things playing in your mind, you get over-aggressive. He is human and made a mistake. I am not endorsing him, but this is why we have managers, to manage people. Had the others around him stepped in, the situation could have been avoided.” he added
Hasan bounced back from a dismal T20 World Cup with strong performances in Bangladesh. For his 3/22 in the first T20I, he was named Man of the Match. In the first Test in Chattogram, Hasan also took seven wickets.
