After being stripped of his captaincy duties, Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli would become an even more dangerous hitter in white-ball cricket.
Kohli had decided to step down as Team India’s T20I captain following the T20 World Cup in the UAE. But he wanted to continue as captain in the 50-over format. However, the Indian selectors chose a single skipper for both white-ball formats. Hence he was replaced as ODI captain by Rohit Sharma.
Gautam Gambhir was asked about Virat Kohli’s future position in white-ball cricket during an appearance on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues.
“Same as Rohit Sharma’s role in red-ball cricket, it’s just that captaincy is not there. It might just free Virat Kohli up much more. He might just become more dangerous in white-ball cricket with the pressure of captaincy not being there on his shoulders.” He responded
Kohli will continue to be a prolific hitter in all formats of the game, according to the former India opener.
“I am sure he is going to make India proud, he is going to keep getting runs in white-ball cricket or in red-ball cricket. At the same time, there will be two different guys probably giving their own thoughts, giving their own vision to the team.” Gambhir elaborated
Kohli hasn’t struck a century in more than two years in any of the three formats of the game. The 33-year-old, who looked set to comfortably surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s 100-century mark in international cricket. It is now tied for third place with Ricky Ponting on 70 hundreds.
Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir continued by saying that just though Kohli is no longer captain. The energy with which he plays the game will not be diminished.
“I am sure India will see the best of Virat Kohli, whether it is red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket. At the same time, the kind of passion he has shown over such a long period of time or the energy. You are going to see the same out of Virat Kohli, whether he is the captain or not.” He observed
Virat Kohli’s captaincy duties in limited-overs cricket have been removed. Which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for him. The Indian batting star may be prepared to take his career to new heights in white-ball cricket. While continuing to skipper India in his favourite format.
