England bowling coach Jon Lewis addressed Ben Stokes’ no-ball controversy on the second day of the first Test against Australia in Brisbane. Lewis believes Stokes would have had more time to reconsider his run-up if the umpires had called his initial no-ball.
The umpires missing the no-ball calls was blamed on a technology glitch, according to several media sites. While the ICC has been relying on third umpires to discover no-balls in recent years, Australia and England have reverted to the traditional rules. As a result, it was up to the on-field umpires to make the call.
The England bowling coach believes that a seam bowler must have a good awareness of his feet, and that the umpires have this responsibility. There would have been no more controversy if the on-field umpires had recognized the first no-ball, according to Lewis.
“What a fast bowler needs is some sort of understanding of where his feet are. You can’t see your own feet. So the umpires are watching the line, and after the first ball, that’s Ben’s first ball on this ground in probably eight years.” he said
“In England you have bowl throughs in the morning, but you don’t have them in Australia on the square; so he’ll need some feedback from the umpires to understand where his feet are. It would’ve been nice for his first ball to be called a no-ball, so he could then have made an adjustment, and from then, he would’ve been behind the line because he then knows where his feet are.” he added
David Warner
Stokes produced a lot of no-balls, including four in a row in one over, one of which ‘dismissed’ Australian opener David Warner for 17 runs. The left-hander took advantage of the reprieve to finish with a score of 94.
Only three of Stokes’ no-balls were detected by the on-field umpires during the innings. Ricky Ponting, a former Australian captain, slammed the umpires doing the same.
Ben Stokes’ nine overs were not just poor with the ball, but also pricey. As Australia gained complete control of the proceedings, the Kiwi-born all-rounder gave up 50 runs. In addition, when preventing a boundary, he had a stiff hamstring.
