BCCI: Perhaps it was a decision taken from afar and seen. Virat Kohli stunned everyone when he said that he would relinquish the captaincy after the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021.
Rohit Sharma was always the obvious pick, and his leadership of a young Indian squad in a limited-overs scrimmage against the Kiwis was no surprise.
With the BCCI announcing that Rohit Sharma will now captain India in the ODI and T20I formats. Kohli will be relieved of some of his responsibilities. As captain, he has squatted, benched, and deadlifted the country’s ambitions, and now the country’s cricket is in skilled hands.
#1 Time for Virat Kohli the batter to show up
Virat Kohli was no slouch with the bat even as captain, and his runs spoke for themselves. In 254 appearances, the Delhi batsman has amassed 12169 runs at a remarkable average of 59.07, with 43 tons and 62 fifties to his name.
Kohli can fine-tune his battering abilities and surpass the GOAT status. He’s already acquired now that captaincy is no longer part of his job description.
#2 A chance to be a mentor in the side
Kohli’s larger-than-life presence will always be part of the dressing room. He can grow the young side with his comments. Rohit Sharma may be the man leading India but Kohli’s larger-than-life presence will always be part of the dressing room. And he can develop the young side with his inputs.
With the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav sure to be part of India’s setup for the foreseeable future. Virat Kohli’s words of wisdom could be beneficial to the new blood.
#3 Considerable reduction in mental stress
While this may appear to be a touch philosophical and a bit of a digression from an editorial standpoint, captaincy for India is a double-edged sword that has always loomed over Kohli’s head.
Virat Kohli may finally relax now that Rohit Sharma has taken over the captaincy. The only thing that can be expected today are those truckloads of runs that the batter is known for scoring without breaking a sweat.
