The Ashes 2021-22 series got started to the worst conceivable start for England. On the first day of the first Test at the Gabba, Australia knocked out the visitors for a measly 147.
Queensland Police joined in the fun, making a funny dig at England during their disastrous first innings performance with the bat.
“Queensland Police are launching an investigation into a group impersonating a Test batting order at the Gabba,” the police department tweeted.
“BNE traffic update: A large crowd for the first test so plan your Cummins and goings. We’d be Lyon if we said there’ll be nothing but Green lights near the Gabba. Don’t say we didn’t Warner #Ashes,” they had tweeted.
With his first five-wicket haul against England, Pat Cummins marked his first match as Australia’s Test captain. On Day 1 at the Gabba, the hosts bowled England out before tea.
With the opening ball of the series, Mitchell Starc bowled Rory Burns, setting the tone for the rest of the series. In the fourth over, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Dawid Malan and had Joe Root edging one behind in the next.

England would have been pleased to win the toss in the first match of the Ashes, but it was far from a successful start for the Joe Root-led team.
After putting up a valiant fight, Ben Stokes became Pat Cummins’ first wicket as Australia’s Test captain. The fourth wicket partnership of Ollie Pope and Haseeb Hameed added 31 runs before Cummins got the latter to edge one to Steve Smith.
Jos Buttler launched a tremendous counter-attack as soon as he walked out to bat. He hit five home runs in his 39-run innings for the visitors. Starc struck him out, ending Pope’s 52-run partnership with him.
Pope was the next man out at the Gabba, giving Cameroon Green his first wicket. To complete the expulsion, Hazlewood made a superb catch. Cummins was the man in charge of tidying up England’s tail. The Australian skipper took five wickets to restrict England to 147 runs.
