INDIA vs NZ 2021: If R Ashwin stays fit for a long time, Sanjay Bangar believes he can surpass Muttiah Muralitharan’s Test wicket record.
In the first match against New Zealand, Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh’s record to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests. In the present second Test, he has seven wickets and is only eight wickets short of Kapil Dev’s total.
Sanjay Bangar was asked about R Ashwin needing just one more wicket to reach 300 Test wickets at home at a Star Sports talk.
“He can challenge Muralitharan’s record if he remains fit for a long time. Because Muttiah Muralitharan has himself said that if someone can break his record, it is Ravichandran Ashwin.” he said
According to the former India all-rounder, R Ashwin’s career has been on the upswing recently, with him making a comeback to the T20I team as well.
“The way he bowls and bowls the long spells and we have seen of late. That it is his second wing because he has made a comeback in T20 cricket as well. He has concentrated more on his off-spin while playing Test cricket. So I feel the indications are good that he might cross that milestone as well.” Bangar elaborated
R Ashwin, who currently has 426 wickets, may have to put up a tremendous effort to surpass Muralitharan’s 800 scalps. Anil Kumble’s record of 619 Test wickets might be a more attainable goal, though it’s still a hefty order.
R Ashwin
R Ashwin became the first bowler to reach 50 wickets in Tests this year, and Aakash Chopra was asked about it.
“It’s incredible because there were four Test matches in between where he didn’t play at all. He did not play the Brisbane Test as well because he was injured. He has taken 50 wickets in a year even after missing five matches.” he said
R Ashwin’s importance in the Indian team was highlighted by the former India opener, who predicted a five-wicket haul from the off-spinner in New Zealand’s second innings.
