Sanjay Bangar has criticised Cheteshwar Pujara for the manner of his dismissal against Ajaz Patel on Day 1 of Mumbai Test

Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed by left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel on the first day of the Mumbai Test, according to former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar.

Pujara’s poor form continued in Mumbai, with the tenacious Indian No. 3 recording a five-ball duck. Pujara danced down the track in the 30th over’s second delivery, attempting to flick the spinner across the line. The ball, though, dipped and sailed past his outside edge, rattling the off-stump.

Bangar told Star Sports that Pujara made a mistake by rushing down the track against a full-length delivery.

“Here, he was looking to go against the turn and the fuller length because we also mentioned in our stint is a lot of deliveries from Ajaz Patel were actually fuller lengths; they were driving deliveries.” he said

Pujara’s dismissal came after New Zealand had shattered a stunning 80-run partnership between Indian openers Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s tenth duck in Test cricket, his fourth at home and first against New Zealand, came against New Zealand. This is his second duck of the season. In addition, the Saurashtra footballer had an unpleasant record against his name.

Pujara now has nine ducks as India’s No.3 batter, the highest of any Indian batter in the position. When it comes to batting at this position, head coach Rahul Dravid and former player Dilip Vengsarkar both have eight.

The latest setback is likely to raise questions about Pujara’s spot in the starting XI. In his last 41 innings, he hasn’t hit a century. His most recent century came against Australia in the 2019 New Year Test.

Following Pujara’s dismissal, Patel dealt another body punch to Team India, dismissing returning skipper Virat Kohli for a four-ball duck. The on-field umpire ruled Kohli out for LBW. However, replays show that the 33-year-bat old’s had an inside edge before the ball struck his pads. The third umpire, however, did not overrule the ruling due to a lack of compelling evidence.
