The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made some surprising decisions in picking their four retention players ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, according to Aakash Chopra.
Before the auction, KKR have decided to stick with Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, and Sunil Narine. Several notable players have been discharged, including Shubman Gill and Lockie Ferguson.
“Let’s see who all Kolkata have retained, that’s an interesting one. They have retained four players – Russell, there would have been a choice between Narine and Lockie Ferguson, they have gone with Narine.” he said
“I was hoping Lockie because the IPL has come back to India. Their pitch, in particular, it does not turn, fast bowling happens there and Lockie Ferguson would have been a fantastic choice in fast bowling but they have not kept him.” Chopra reasoned
With the ball, Narine and Ferguson both shone for KKR in the IPL 2021. The former took 16 wickets, while the latter was responsible for 13 dismissals. Ferguson, on the other hand, has played six fewer games than Narine.
According to Aakash Chopra, KKR has also parted ways with its present captain and the player who was supposed to succeed him in the future.
Eoin Morgan
“They have not kept Eoin Morgan and Shubman Gill as well. It is possible that Shubman might have said that he does not want to be the third or the fourth retention and they might have said that you are not our captaincy candidate anymore.” He elaborated
Venkatesh Iyer’s spectacular rise in KKR colors was highlighted by the former India opener.
“Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer. It has been magic for Iyer, he played just half the IPL and he is already flying, which is beautiful. So they have kept four players, which includes two important Indians.” Chopra observed
Iyer made his IPL 2021 debut for KKR exclusively in the UAE leg. The southpaw, who hit 370 batters for an average of 41.11, was one of the most important architects in the game.
