Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg lauded India and New Zealand umpires Nitin Menon and Virender Sharma for their performance on the final day of play. As the Kanpur Test concluded in a dramatic tie. The umpires had to monitor the light level on a regular basis and speak with the people on the field.
The umpires used the meter to check the level at both ends of the crease at the end of each over. The amount detected on Stumps on Day 1 served as the Test’s benchmark.
Despite the fact that India bowled the required number of overs for the day. Play was called off due to bad lighting with a few minutes remaining on the clock.
“Umpires did a wonderful job dealing with bad light. They are Indian umpires, the way that they controlled themselves in the last hour of play was superb. Thus, They kept getting the meter out, kept communicating with the players all the time. They had full control of the situation.” Hogg said
Both camps opted to walk off the field and settle the Test match. As a draw after a lengthy discussion with the players led by Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Axar Patel
Hogg singled out Axar Patel for his ability to strike batters from both sides of the plate. The left-arm spinner got six wickets in the first Test between India and New Zealand, including three left-handers and three right-handers.
During the Test, Patel took advantage of the footmarks left by both teams’ seamers, who were all right-handed. For the left-handed batsman, this resulted in several rough spots outside the off-stump.
“Very very difficult for the right-handers to score against him. When he was bowling to the left-handers, I like the way he uses the footmarks created by all the right-arm pacers. All of them left different footmarks and Axar Patel bowled very accurately into those.” Hogg said
“He is dominant in Indian conditions as he bowls a lot of sidespin. Needs to bowl more overspin to be effective in overseas conditions.” he added
Patel has played in all five of India’s Test matches at home. Side spin comes effortlessly to him because of his bowling angle, and it has gotten him results. Despite not being a skilled ball turner, Axar Patel will have to rely on flight rather than drift in foreign conditions.
