Tim Paine has confirmed he will be taking leave from all cricket for an indefinite period of time

Another terrible development in Australian cricket occurred on Friday (November 26). Tim Paine, the former Australian Test captain, has announced that he will be retiring from all cricket for an undetermined length of time.

On Twitter, Paine’s manager, James Henderson, announced that the Tasmanian wicketkeeper will take a break to focus on his mental health.

“Confirming that (Paine) is stepping away from cricket for an indefinite mental health break. We are extremely concerned for his and Bonnie’s well-being and will be making no further comment at this time,” Henderson wrote

The news comes only days after Paine resigned as Australian Test captain following the re-emergence of his sexting controversy with a Cricket Tasmania official from a few years ago.

While stepping down as captain, Paine expressed his commitment to playing for Australia in the 2017 Ashes at home. Earlier this week, he played in a second XI FC game for Tasmania. He was also included in the Marsh ODD Cup squad.

For the first few of Tests, Paine was the only wicketkeeper picked in the Ashes squad. Because of his abrupt departure, one of Alex Carey or Josh Inglis will take over as the Gabba Test’s goalkeeper.

‘Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future,” he said

“Tim’s decision makes him unavailable for selection for today’s Marsh One-Day Cup match against Western Australia. His place in the squad will be taken by Charlie Wakim. he added

Because of his self-imposed exile, Paine may have played his final international match for Australia. Since making his debut in 2010, the 37-year-old has played in 35 Tests, 35 ODIs, and 12 T20Is. Taking over the captaincy in the aftermath of the Newlands ball tampering controversy.
