Ricky Ponting, Australia’s greatest batsman, believes that managing his own overs will be a key issue for incoming Test captain Pat Cummins. Steve Smith will have a significant role to play as vice-captain. According to the Delhi Capitals coach, as he would have to instruct the pacer at critical junctures.
While it’s unclear whether the right-armer will under bowl himself in these situations. Ponting suggested that Steve Smith move in to assist Cummins.
“The only concern I have is if it’s the same again, where Pat’s the standout fast bowler, is he going to keep bowling himself? Because the team is going to need it,” said Ponting.
“Or will he be worried about what people are going to think if he just keeps himself on the whole time? That’s where vice captain’s role is really important in this whole thing,” he added.
Pat Cummins
On Friday, Pat Cummins was chosen Australia’s next Test captain. In the lengthier format, he will be the 47th captain to lead the team. In addition, ex-skipper Steve Smith has been re-assigned to the position of vice-captain.
The reference to the 2018 Sandpapergate affair, Pointing stated that everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives. He emphasized that the hitter had to pay the price for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal.
However, Ponting believes Smith has made a strong comeback since returning to the side in 2019 after serving his suspension. Ponting also stated that he was not shocked that the 32-year-old was chosen as Cummins’ deputy by Cricket Australia.
“We’ve all made mistakes. We all said at the time it was a severe penalty for all those guys – and it had to be, that’s the way it was at the time. But it’s a long time ago now.” he said
“He’s played some great cricket since then and has not stepped a foot wrong with anything he’s done in his life since then. So as far as I’m concerned, if Cricket Australia think it’s okay, then I’m not surprised they have given him the job.” he added
The eagerly awaited Ashes series between Australia and England will be held in Australia. The series will get off on December 8 in Brisbane, with the first match taking place there.
