IPL Auction 2022: The Delhi Capitals (DC) of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have decided to keep left-arm spinner Axar Patel for the IPL 2022 season.
For the upcoming IPL season, DC has retained Axar, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje. Shreyas Iyer, who was the franchise’s captain until Pant took over as the leader, has decided to return to the auction. Pant was named captain when Iyer suffered a shoulder injury ahead of the IPL 2021 season, and the franchise wants to keep the keeper-batter as the team’s leader.
Axar, on the other hand, has a lot of IPL experience, having taken 95 wickets in 109 games. According to reports, the spinner was chosen above senior opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has performed admirably for DC in recent years. IPL Auction 2022
While some may question why DC chose Axar above Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada, we offer three reasons why we believe it was a wise decision.
#1 Axar’s versatile bowling skills
Axar, who is 27 years old, is a very versatile bowler. He can open the bowling, handle the franchise’s business in the middle overs. Even bowl at the death if necessary. He even won DC a match by bowling the Super Over against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Chennai during IPL 2021. He only gave up seven runs while facing luminaries like David Warner and Kane Williamson to help DC win a thrilling game.
Axar has a great deal of faith in himself, as seen by the fact that he persuaded Pant to give him the Super Over ahead of bowler Avesh Khan. He then followed up with a stunning over under duress. It’s worth noting that he was making a comeback after missing the first several matches due to COVID-19. As a result, the show also demonstrated his mental toughness.
#2 His excellent economy
One of Axar’s biggest skills with the ball is his ability to keep things extremely tight. Because of his near-immaculate line and length, Axar rarely ventures for runs, whether he is picking up wickets or not. Even after playing over 100 IPL games, he has an overall career economy rate of 7.22.
Over the last two IPL seasons, Axar’s economy has improved even more. While he only took nine wickets in 15 games in IPL 2020, he averaged only 6.41 runs per over. He took more wickets this season while maintaining his domination on the opposition batters. Axar took 15 wickets for a 6.41 economy rate.
#3 His all-round skills
Axar is more than just a good left-arm spinner, despite his statistics. With the bat, he’s a decent player. With the Willow, DC hasn’t required his skills as much because they have such a strong batting lineup. During the whole IPL 2021 season, Axar only faced 40 deliveries.
Axar produced a lot of useful contributions down the order during his early years in the IPL, when he played with Punjab Kings (PBKS). He scored a best score of 42* in the IPL 2014 season, 206 runs in the 2015 season, and 227 runs at a strike rate of 140.12 in the 2017 season.
