Tim Paine has stepped down from his role as captain of the Australian Test team

Tim Paine has resigned from his position as Australia’s Test captain. After reports surfaced four years ago of him sending sexually explicit communications to a female coworker, he made the decision.

Despite the event, the wicket-keeper batsman declared his choice to the media. He stated that he is still a member of the Australian cricket squad.

“Today, I’m announced my decision to stand down as the captain of the Australian men’s test team. It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but the right one for me, my family, and cricket. As a background on my decision, nearly four years ago, Im involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. At the time, the exchange was the subject of a thorough CA Integrity Unit investigation. Throughout which I fully participated in and openly participated in.” he said

Paine had been missing from the Australian team for seven years before being returned a few months after the event. Following the infamous Sandpaper controversy in South Africa, he was subsequently assigned captaincy duties. The Sandpaper incident resulted in the suspensions of then-captain Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Green.

With the Ashes just around the corner, Paine believes that stepping aside as captain is the appropriate move. He does not want the story to detract from the team’s preparations for the next match against England.

“I believe that it is the right decision for me to stand down as captain, effective immediately. Thus, I do not want this to become an unwelcome disruption to the team ahead of what is a huge Ashes Series.” he said

“I have loved my role as captain of the Australian cricket team. It’s been the greatest privilege of my sporting life to lead the Australian men’s test team. I’m grateful for the support of my teammates and proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together.” he added

Paine’s resignation accepted by the Australian cricket board. Which has promised him an expedited procedure to find a replacement. Pat Cummins, the current vice-captain, had stated that if and when the time comes, he will be ready to lead the team.
