With Rahul Dravid at the helm, former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels bullish about the team’s possibilities. At the same time, he does not want everyone’s expectations to be unrealistic.
Dravid’s coaching career got off to a winning start in Jaipur, when the Men in Blue beat New Zealand in the opening T20I of a three-match series.
Ravi Shastri’s contract terminated after the T20 World Cup in the UAE, therefore Rahul Dravid took over as coach. Dravid went through the ranks of coaching, including a stint with the Indian youth setup.
“See, I hope and pray that this era is a good one for Indian cricket, but it is important that we also keep our expectations reasonable. It is not like everything will be changed in the matter of a single day or a single series. But, the experience Rahul Dravid has with Rohit Sharma’s calmness, and if Dravid shares his experience and his discipline when he was a member of the team as a player and manages to put that work ethic into the squad, no doubt this era will be good since Dravid has experience playing at the big stages.” Gambhir said
Rahul Dravid
Earlier this year, Rahul Dravid coached a second-string Indian squad on their tour of Sri Lanka. Following a COVID breakout in the bio-bubble, the team won the ODI series before losing the T20I series.
While India has shown their worth in bilateral series over the last decade, they have yet to replicate their success in ICC competitions. Rahul Dravid has a large pool of quality players from which to select a side capable of winning an ICC tournament.
With three ICC events in three years, he has the opportunity to leave the best possible mark as the coach of the Indian team.
As the Indian squad prepares to play the Blackcaps in the second T20I of the series in Ranchi on Friday, he will be looking for his first series win as the permanent head coach of the team.
