India turned everything around Friday night after a dismal performance at the just concluded T20 World Cup. Team India’s inaugural T20I against New Zealand in Jaipur heralded the start of a new era in Indian cricket.
Virat Kohli handed over the T20I captaincy to Rohit Sharma, and Rahul Dravid took over as the men in blue’s head coach.
It’s been said that getting off to a solid start is half the battle. After cruising to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in their opening encounter, Sharma and Dravid must believe it.
Suryakumar Yadav was the top performer for the Men in Blue, scoring 62 runs off 40 deliveries. After showcasing a range of amazing strokeplay, he was also named player of the match.
At the finale of their run-chase, Team India appeared jittery and cautious. However, their victory over the Blackcaps in the first T20I should instill confidence in them. After the recent disappointments of the T20 World Cup, it’s something for the supporters to shout about.
#1: Ravichandran Ashwin’s brilliance with the ball
Ravichandran Ashwin has been on a return path in T20Is since his participation in the side against Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup. The right-arm off-spinner was crucial in restricting the flow of runs in his side’s middle overs, returning with superb figures of 2/23 from four overs.
#2: India pulling it back in the final three overs of New Zealand innings
Despite losing back-to-back wickets of Chapman and Phillips in the 14th over, Guptill kept New Zealand in contention. Using the pace supplied by Indian quicks, he launched an onslaught in the next three overs to take New Zealand to 144 at the end of 17 overs.
#3: Team India’s top-order playing with a sense of freedom
At the T20 World Cup, India’s top-order looked tired and overburdened by expectations against Pakistan and New Zealand.
However, in the first T20I against New Zealand in Jaipur, India’s top three batsmen performed with complete freedom and authority. With flair and flamboyance, they plunder the bowlers.
