New Zealand opener Martin Guptill praised Ravichandran Ashwin. Then describing him as a “wily bowler” who “simply doesn’t throw poor balls.”
In the first of three T20Is, India and New Zealand met in Jaipur. Despite fifties from Martin Guptill and Mark Chapman, the Black Caps scored a disappointing 164-6 when they batted first. Ravichandran Ashwin’s economical yet forceful 2/23 stint ended the innings. When he dismissed both Chapman and Glenn Phillips in the same over. With two balls to spare, India successfully chased down the total.

Martin Guptill said in the post-match press conference that Ravichandran Ashwin has never bowled him a nasty ball. Ashwin’s discipline and change of pace, according to the senior batsman, make him “simply very difficult to get away from.”
“He’s a wily bowler, he’s got great control of his line and length and he just doesn’t bowl bad balls. I don’t remember him bowling me any bad bowls throughout his career. He’s just very difficult to get away, you know, his change of pace is so subtle and so well-controlled, he’s just very hard to get away.” Martin Guptill said
Starting with the fifth over of the innings, Ravichandran Ashwin’s first three overs were primarily about managing the runs and generating pressure.
He tricked Chapman on his penultimate over, the 14th overall, with a flighted off-break that followed a flat delivery that was smashed for four. Phillips, who took over for Champan, struggled to read the tweaker changes and was cleverly set up to play across a carrom ball and finish up with a 3-ball duck.
Rohit Sharma began his captaincy tenure with a swashbuckling 36-ball 48, which provided the team with the necessary impetus. Suryakumar Yadav, who batted at No. 3 and produced a cheeky 40-ball 62, looked like a duck in water. The wickets of the two caused a minor hiccup near the end, but Rishabh Pant’s mature cameo of 17 helped India win.
