Bharat Arun pondered on Team India’s journey and the legacy that captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri will leave behind just days before his four-year tenure as bowling coach came to an end.
Bharat Arun, speaking at a news conference on Sunday, said Kohli and Shastri sought to put together a side that could win in every situation.
He stated that the voyage required India. To tap into its fast-bowling capabilities and develop a ‘disciplined’ and aggressive approach to compliment the spin department.
“See I think Ravi and Virat got together. They wanted to put up a team that could win in all conditions. And in order to do so, it was important that we had a very balanced [squad]. Everybody knows that we had one of the best spin attacks in the world. Bharat Arun said
“It was also about creating another force that would compliment our [spin] bowling and suit in all conditions. So all of us came together to say, ‘We have enough fast bowlers but we need to create a lot more discipline in their attack and also to make sure they remain fresh throughout.’ That was the only chance of us winning.” he added
Kohli and Shastri’s choice to support a five-bowler approach was also praised by Bharat Arun.
He claimed that the combined efforts of the two and others in the team were responsible for India’s two victories in Australia and their near-clinching of a shortened and postponed series in England.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were consistently good enough for India to win home Tests. However, under the tenures of Ravi Shastri and Bharat Arun, new fast-bowling talent such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur emerged.
