Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal believes India’s overconfidence cost them the T20 World Cup in 2021. Ajmal further claimed that the Indian media had grown conceited in their desire to see the Men in Blue win the competition.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, India has fallen short of expectations, contrary to early predictions. Their season began with a ten-wicket loss to Pakistan, followed by another setback to New Zealand. Virat Kohli and his teammates are facing an early departure from the competition after a 66-run victory over Afghanistan.
The Indian media’s overconfidence, according to Saeed Ajmal, has harmed the team’s chances in the World Cup.
“India were very overconfident, their media was overconfident. Their media had even decided on the finalists.” he said
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli and his guys had already had a wake-up call after Pakistan’s ten-wicket thrashing of India. After two straight defeats, their top-order finally delivered against Afghanistan, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul both scoring fifty. After setting Afghanistan 211 to chase, the duo’s attack proved vital in India’s 66-run victory.
Saeed Ajmal, on the other hand, was all praise for Jasprit Bumrah, who recently spoke out about the exhaustion brought on by the bio-security bubble. The former off-spinner felt for the athletes, who have to deal with so much in such uncertain times.
“More than cricket, the bio-secure bubble is tough. You can’t do much by staying in a hotel room alone for six months. Sportspersons need some outings. Although watching cricket is easy, it takes a lot out of the players out there; hence, they need relaxation. Sportspersons have to go out and relax to refresh themselves but that can’t happen currently.” he said
As a result, while Pakistan has secured a spot in the semi-finals, India is clinging to a sliver of hope. Kohli and his teammates would need a lot of results to proceed to the next round of the event.
