Aakash Chopra says “Rahul Dravid will have to groom the next leader after Virat and Rohit”

During Rahul Dravid’s upcoming time with the squad, Aakash Chopra believes he will have to train the next Team India captain after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Chopra believes that if India does not begin the process now, it will be too late when Kohli and Sharma, both over 30, retire.

Aakash Chopra made the comments in a video posted to his YouTube account. He outlined the biggest hurdles that Rahul Dravid may face when he takes over Ravi Shastri’s demanding position following the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Aakash Chopra, citing the leadership problem as one of them, offered three probable heirs.

“Jammy (Rahul Dravid’s nickname) will have to groom the next leader. Currently, you have Virat and Rohit. Rohit will become the T20 captain and possibly the 50-over captain in due course as well. And then you have Kohli who’s the Test captain. Absolutely fine. But both of them are not under-30 but over-30. In such a situation, you have to groom the next leader and who’s next in line. Because if you don’t start grooming them now, then by the time these guys leave, you won’t have anyone. Whether it’s Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul, it’s something that Rahul [Dravid] will have to figure out. ” he said

Rahul Dravid’s coaching career will begin in November with a T20I series against New Zealand. This will also be India’s first T20I match since Virat Kohli announced his retirement from the captaincy in the shortest format.

While Rohit Sharma is the favorite to take his place as captain, his vice-captain for the series – or a temporary captain if he’s rested – will likely provide insight into the selectors’ plans for the team.
