To begin with, Clive Lloyd wore green rather than maroon for West Indies’ match versus South Africa. He responded with a wide smile when questioned. “I’m hoping that not wearing maroon improves our fortune!”
No, his luck hasn’t changed as the West Indies have put in yet another lackluster effort and are set to quit the T20 World Cup 2021 early. It’s perplexing to watch a team with match-winners and franchise stars like Andre Russell and Kieran Pollard fail to meet the World Cup challenge.
Boria: Clive, things are just not going the West Indies way?
No, they aren’t, Clive. We’ve had some awful cricket performances. To be able to challenge South Africa, we needed to earn 165 points. Once again, a series of bad shots taken at the wrong time cost us dearly. The first game was a disaster, and you’d think we’d bounce back in the second, but that didn’t happen either. Now we must win all we can and hope that other outcomes go our way in order for us to have a shot at the World Cup. To be honest, as defending champions, this was a really poor showing.
Boria:So what do you think went wrong?
Clive: I mean everything (laughs). When you play for your country, you must be confident in your abilities. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you. It’s all about the ultimate mantle when it comes to the World Cup, though. As a result, you now have the title of World Champion. You can exhibit the trophy with pride and proclaim your team to be the best in the world. The entire globe is involved. That is why you and I both participate in this sport.
West Indies face an uphill job to stay in contention for a semifinal position in the T20 World Cup 2021 after being thrashed twice, first by England (6-wicket defeat) and then by South Africa (8-wicket loss).
