Salman Butt, a former Pakistan captain, has voiced dissatisfaction with Waqar Younis’ contentious ‘namaz’ statement following Pakistan’s historic triumph over India in the T20 World Cup 2021 match on Sunday.
Butt claims that such statements are not expected from some quarters. But that they have nonetheless been made. He also asked people in both India and Pakistan. To focus on the good in order for the two countries’ relations to improve.
Waqar said during a TV broadcast that Mohammad Rizwan offered namaz on a ground surrounded by Hindus something “extremely special” for him, which sparked outrage in India.
Butt responded to Waqar’s divisive statement by emphasizing. The importance of respecting each other’s cultures and refraining from saying anything that would offend someone’s feelings.
“It does not matter which country you come from, whatever your beliefs are, there should be mutual respect for each other’s culture and religion. Nothing should be spoken which hurts people’s sentiments and makes them feel bad. Whether it is an Indian or Pakistani player, current or ex, we should not go below the belt.” The former cricketer commented
“There are lots of players who blessed and have become superstars of the game. It is important to have a balanced mindset. You don’t expect such things to be said from certain corners. Unfortunately, it has happened.” Butt further added
The 37-year-old also advised people on both sides of the border to focus. On the positive aspects of the India-Pakistan match and ignore the negative aspects.
Virender Sehwag
Butt has previously voiced displeasure with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s tweets criticizing individuals in India “celebrating Pakistan’s triumph.
“It’s better to talk about things that unite and not divide. There were a lot of good things that happened during the match. People from both sides praised the good cricket that was played. Pakistan’s players interacted with Kohli and Dhoni. Let’s highlight and praise the good things and ignore the bad things. We all know that in both countries someone or the other comes and says something that hurts sentiments.” He added
Meanwhile, following Pakistan’s 10-wicket victory over India in Dubai, former captain Waqar has apologized for his controversial ‘namaz’ remark.
