Shubman Gill after match-winning knock against SRH- “It was important to assess the wicket” in the IPL 2021

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won two critical points over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Dubai thanks to Shubman Gill’s match-winning innings.

Shubman Gill held the fort from one end in a chase of 116 runs, despite KKR losing Venkatesh Iyer and Rahul Tripathi for pennies. To carry the game to the end, the teenager put up a 55-run stand with Nitish Rana.

Shubman Gill, speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, emphasized the significance of going deep on a slow wicket.

“It was important to keep the wickets in hand, and when the balls and runs were closer than just take it easy. Thus, It was important to assess the wicket. It wasn’t easy to hit the spinners on this wicket.” he said

Shubman Gill, who had a couple of low scores coming into the game, was keen to get back into form with the bat. Punjab’s batter confessed that he intended to take the upper hand against the bowlers, and his strategy paid off in the end.

“It wasn’t easy to hit the spinners on this wicket. I was targeting the shorter side, and the leg side was shorter than the off-side at one end. When I didn’t have many runs under the belt, you don’t want the opposition to gain the upper hand,” Shubman Gill said.

“When you play on slower wickets, it’s more important to play with the wrists and that comes naturally to me. I took on the extra pace (of Umran) today and it came off in this game, but in another game it might not,” he added.
